初心者が中国語を使えるようになるまで、次のようなステップで勉強を進める。
(1) 中国語とはどういうものか。
日本語との違いを比較しながら中国語で使用されている漢字、発音の仕方及び語法ルールを知る。
(2) 基礎発音をマスターする。
発音のローマ字表記（ピンイン）を覚えて正しく読めるようにする。日本語にない声調要素を把握して声調パターンが身につくよう練習する。上達するためには付属のCDによる繰り返し練習は不可欠である。毎週の授業にその発音をチェックする、若しくは音声ファイルを提出してもらう。
(3)単語と語法の習得
基本中国語をマスターするために、各課の単語の意味と文法ルールを理解して本文を勉強する。その仕上げはドリルをやって学習内容を復習する。
(4)手で書く。
中国語は初めてなので、日本語の漢字との区別を認識しながら手で書いて練習するのが重要である。課題またはテストは正しい中国語の漢字を書かねばならない。
